3/29 Tuesday 9/29 is the English EOC exam. Latin I will be relocated and many students in the class will be testing. Because of the testing, the class will be devoted to vocabulary review and conjugation practice. Students will learn the plupfect tense of the verb. Students will NOT have the vocabulary Stage 15 quiz on Thursday as early scheduled. Study for Vocabulary Quiz Stage 15 on Monday, April 4.
3/31 Tuesday 9/31 is the English II EOC exam. Latin I will be relocated and several students in the class will be testing. Because of the testing, the class will be devoted to vocabulary review and conjugation practice. Students will learn the pluperfect tense of the verb. 1/5-15 The first week and a half back, the Latin I class finished the red Unit 1 textbook by completing Stage 12 and learning about the eruption of Vesuvius. We also did two practice National Latin Exam tests. Students will be taking the National Latin Exam on Wednesday March 9. 2016 during our regular class period. The National Latin Exam is a nationally recognized achievement test. Students who score well will receive recognition.
1/20 Stage 12 vocabulary quiz. Students will return their Unit 1 books and replace them with the blue Unit 2 book!! Students will be given a project assignment on early Roman history. We will begin Unit 2 Stage 13 by studying the infinitive verb form. Students will translate captions and the first story introducing them to the new story line and characters in Unit 2. Homework: Handout
1/22 Practice and review of the infinitive verb form and verbs that take a complementary infinitive. Stage 13 vocabulary preview and translation. FALL 2015
8/25 Latin I students will be introduced to the course expectations and classroom routines. Students will learn the pronunciation of Latin words, practice simple greetings and make connections between common Latin words and their English derivatives.
8/27 Students will continue to practice pronunciation and simple greetings. They will learn the basic structure of a simple Latin sentence, develop vocabulary, and practice reading a simple Latin text. Students will learn about the geography of the ancient world and some simple facts about the daily life of the Romans. Complete all of Unit 1. Homework: Study for Latin Quiz 1 (Vocab checklist 1)
8/31 Vocabulary Quiz 1. Students will continue practicing pronunciation and greetings. Students will be introduced to new vocabulary and learn the subject verb direct object structure of a Latin sentence. Students will choose Latin names. Complete all of Unit 2. Homework: Study for Latin Quiz 2.
9/2 Students will practice simple greetings using their new Latin names! Students will learn new vocabulary and will work with the subject-verb-direct object sentence structure. Students will also practice reading Latin text. Homework: Study for Latin Quiz 3.
9/4 Vocabulary Quiz 2. Students will complete the activities in Stage 2 with a focus on identifying the nominative and accusative cases in Latin. Students will learn some of the customs of the Romans. Students will be introduced to Stage 3 vocabulary and read two passages in Stage 3. Students will learn a vocabulary review game. 9/9 Students will review nominative and accusative cases. Students will focus on prepositional phrases and learn the ablative case. Students will read the story "tonsor" and answer questions. Students will learn the conjugation of the verb sum, esse. Students will translate the story Venalicius and answer questions in Latin.
9/11 Students will complete an assessment on the grammar, vocabulary and culture of Stages 1 and 2. Students will complete activities in Stage 3 and review for the Stage 3 Vocabulary quiz. Homework: Study for Stage 3 Vocab quiz.
9/15 Stage 3 Vocabulary Quiz. Students will learn the conjugation of a regular verb in the present tense in Latin. Students will translate a passage with attention to the endings on the verbs in the passage. Homework: Practice with conjugations.
9/17 Students will practice with the present tense indicative verb conjugation. Students will translate a passage with careful attention to verb and noun endings. Homework: Complete PTL exercises Stage 4 and study for quiz on sum, esse.
9/21 Quiz on sum, esse. Students will practice conjugating regular verbs. Students will complete PTL exercises and look at the forum of Pompeii and the Forum Romanum. Students will complete the word study and discuss English words related to the vocab list. Students will learn the singular and plural forms of nouns and translate the captions in Stage 5. 9/25 Major assessment on Vocabulary. Stages 1-4. Quiz on regular/irregular verbs. Students will listen to and answer comprehension questions on the story Poppaea. 10/1 Vocabulary Quiz Stage 5. Students will practice with past tenses of regular verbs and translate a passage with a focus on the new tenses. Students will learn the conjugation of sum, esse in the imperfect and perfect tenses. Students will learn about the role of slaves in ancient Rome. 10/14 Students will have a shortened class after the PSAT schedule. Students will learn the 4 conjugations of the regular verb. Students will learn about Roman beliefs about life after death. Students will work on making Halloween cards for other Latin students in the district. Homework: Finish assignment on the 4 conjugations.
10/16 Students will practice the perfect and imperfect tenses. Students will translate the story "fabula mirabilis" and listen to the story "Decens" Homework PTL A p. 112.
10/20 Students will review the present, imperfect and perfect tenses of the verb. Students will listen to the story "Decens", respond to Latin questions and analyze the story. Students will translate "post cenam." Students will read "Roman Beliefs about Life after Death." Students will create a simple ghost story/play in Latin in small groups. Homework: Students will review the nominative and accusative cases by doing PTL B page 112.

Students will translate the captions in Stage 8 and diagram some Latin sentences. Students willl complete ghost stories they began on 10/22. 10/28 Students will take the Stage 5-7 multiple choice test on vocabulary and grammar. Work on preparing ghost stories/ translate "Gladiatores" Stage 8. Homework: Prepare for Cena Romana!!
10/30 Students will celebrate a Cena Romana. While enjoying our Roman food, students will present their "ghost stories" to the class. Students will learn about the gladiators in Rome and Pompeii. Students will finish reading and discuss "gladiatores." Students will watch the opening scenes of Spartacus. Homework: Have a restful, safe weekend and come back ready to study Latin!!

11/30 Cartoon Caption assignments are due. The theme of our new stage is Roman education. Students will review verb tenses and the irregular verbs sum and eo. Students will then translate the story "Controversia." Part of the story will be read as a whole class and part of the story will be translated as a "Cloze reading" activity. Students will review the nominative, accusative and dative cases for a grammar assessment. Homework: Study for assessment on case usage.
